Assessment of earthing resistance and lightning arrester performance at Busitema University

Abstract

This report presents an assessment of earthing resistance and lightning arrester performance at Busitema university main campus. Reliable grounding and surge protection are critical for ensuring electrical safety and minimizing risks such as equipment failure and electric shock. Field measurements were conducted using a Megger DET4TD2 earth resistance tester, following the standard fall-of-potential method. Data was collected from various key buildings including the administration block, faculty building, halls of residence, library, and staff quarters. Results showed that while several locations maintained acceptable resistance levels during wet seasons, most values rose above the IEEE and national standard of 5 ohms in dry conditions. Many buildings also lacked functional lightning arresters. The findings revealed that several locations exceeded the recommended resistance threshold, particularly in rocky areas plus aging buildings especially the staff quarters, and many buildings lacked functional lightning arresters. Recommendations have been made to improve grounding systems and install or repair lightning protection equipment. The study contributes to enhancing electrical safety and guiding future maintenance strategies at the university.
