This IT was conducted for 10 weeks at National Semi-Arid Resources Research Institute (NaSARRI) located in the Eastern Agro-ecological zone in Serere District 27 km South of Soroti town from 21st May to 27th July 2018 with the objective of relating class room knowledge with the field knowledge. It was carried in different programs in a rotation i.e. Cotton, dry land Legumes, Oil crops program and lastly in dry land cereals program.
Activities conducted during the internship placement included; disease identification, thinning cotton, stand count in finger millet, field marking in cotton to set up an experimental trial, seed sorting in cotton, data collection the 10 boll samples 1A, 1B and 2A in cotton, pest scouting in cotton and cowpea, disease scoring, emasculation in all crops, sorting and weighing green gram Seeds; data collection on flowering date and 50% flowering in sun flower, punching sun flower leaves, and Rouging finger millet off types etc. The major skills attained during the placement were: Crossing of various breeders' lines, field marking, data collection, emasculation and selfing. The main challenge during the placement was inadequate tools at the research station to be used by students to demonstrate research activities and long distance since the institution had only the accommodation for staff members. Despite of overwhelming challenges, my industrial training enabled me to gain demonstrable practical and technical skills and knowledge in various activities carried out. |
